Tuberous Tubular Breasts

Tuberous / Tubular Breasts
Breast Concern

The shape and size of the breasts are unique to every woman.

Tuberous breasts are irregularly shaped; often appearing long and droopy, with nipples that point downwards from the end of the breast. This concern can affect either one or both of the breasts and may develop at any age. Although this is more commonly reported by women, men can also be affected by tuberous breasts – also known as tubular breasts.

In most cases, the appearance of tuberous breasts is established by the end of puberty. The specific shape and size can vary from case to case, but the typical appearance develops as conical rather than the usual rounded shape that is considered more natural-looking.

This happens as the growth of breast tissue (usually during adolescence) is more prevalent at the base of the breast, which can also become constricting. As a result, the breasts then also appear to sag and sit in a lower position on the chest, which also causes the inframammary fold to look abnormal. Areola hypertrophy is a concern where the areola (darkened skin around the nipple) appears larger than normal, and often accompanies tuberous breasts.

When tuberous breasts develop during adulthood, it is often ageing or pregnancy that is the cause. Lost volume in the breasts can give a tubular look to breasts that hang or appear particularly saggy.

Real Plastic Surgery considers the specific ‘type’ of the concern before a suitable approach is recommended. Type I, type II or type III is determined by the severity of constricted tissue and the extent to which tuberous breasts hang on the chest. Surgery may consist of breast augmentation with the use of implants, the removal of excess skin and the repositioning of the nipples. One or a combination of these procedures can create a natural looking appearance of the breasts.
