Scar Revision

Scar Revision
Breast Prodecure

Scar revision surgery is a procedure that uses surgical techniques to remove a scar, or dramatically reduce its appearance. Scars can develop anywhere on the face and body where the skin has been damaged, often causing aesthetic concerns, physical discomfort or restrictive movements. Different types of scarring can appear, depending on the reason for injury to the skin.

Scar revision surgery usually takes around 1 hour, however, this can depend on the extent of the concern. We use a local anaesthetic and you can usually go home on the same day.

You may find that downtime is minimal and you can go about your day as normal, depending on the approach that was taken. However, you may need to take a few days off work.

In many cases only 1 procedure is required for long-term results.

To restore the natural tone and texture of the skin’s surface.

Sports and exercise may need to be avoided for approx. 1 - 6 weeks, depending on the surgery.

If you have any doubts. Our team of experts will provide support and guidance all the way through your treatment journey; using the consultation to determine your suitability and your certainty.

What to expect on the day

The specific approach your surgeon will take will be decided at the consultation, and will depend on the type of scarring that the procedure is to address.

In general the aim of surgery is to remove the top layers of skin. This is done by making a series of small incisions on the surface of the scar so the skin can be trimmed away. In most cases the cuts are made in a V shape which enables the scar to be reestablished so it looks less noticeable. If a scar is located on a joint, a technique will be used to help release the constricting tissue so that movement becomes easier and more comfortable. The modern techniques used in this type of procedure allows for the skin and tissues to heal more effectively. As a result, the new ‘scar’ is softer and less conspicuous.

Showering after scar revision surgery

As the treatment site will be dressed, our surgeons often advise that you wait for 1 week before showering as the wounds will need to be kept dry while they are healing. We typically see our patients 1 week after surgery, when we assess the healing wounds. Depending on your rate of recovery, our team will advise when certain activities can be resumed.

Follow up and aftercare

Our aftercare advice is given in order to help you recover successfully from the procedure. You may need to take suitable pain relief to minimise any discomfort, and certain activities may need to be avoided until you are more comfortable, such as heavy lifting and exercise. Our aftercare advice will be in accordance with the type of approach we take and the extent of the scarring that has been revised.

Frequently Asked Questions
  • Is scar revision permanent?

This type of surgery often gives a permanent solution to reducing the appearance of scarring. In most cases removing the scarring completely can be difficult, but it is likely that the scarring is much less noticeable. Scarring will naturally fade over time, and if a significant amount of scarring needs to be reduced a series of procedures may be required.

  • Are there any side effects?

As with many other surgical procedures that require incisions in the skin, swelling and bruising may appear. This can take a few days to settle, and the treated area may also continue to feel sensitive for a couple of weeks.

  • When will I see results?

The full outcome of a scar revision procedure may take up to 12 months to develop. This allows for all scarring to fade to a paler colour. This will depend on how many procedures have taken place, and the size and type of scarring that has been addressed.
