Eyebags

Eyebags
Face Concern

Eyebags often affect the area beneath the eye or the lower eyelid.

They commonly give a puffy look to this area of the face, which may also be accompanied by loose skin. When a person has developed eyebags, they can start to look weary and older than their actual years. This concern is usually aesthetic and doesn’t necessarily mean there is an underlying medical condition.

The cause of eyebags is commonly found to be ageing. As levels of collagen and elastin naturally decrease, the skin becomes weak and thin. The skin around the eyes is already quite delicate in nature so when it weakens it provides less support for the underlying muscles and tissues. This can lead to the fatty deposits that usually reinforce the structure of the eyes shifting to rest in the lower lids, puffing up the skin. In addition, fluid can also accumulate within this pocket, exacerbating the concern.

It is not unusual for dark circles to appear alongside eyebags which result from the puffiness casting a shadow underneath.

Although ageing skin is a natural process that everyone will experience to some degree, the way it develops can vary from person to person. Factors such as sun exposure, smoking and alcohol consumption can accelerate the progression of the ageing process. In the case of eyebags, allergies (including hayfever), lack of sleep and certain medical conditions can make their development more likely.

At Real Plastic Surgery we perform Blepharoplasty, a surgical procedure that helps to remove and tighten loose skin and tissues from around the eye. A lower blepharoplasty is performed on the lower eyelid and provides an effective, long-term solution for the appearance of eyebags. One procedure is usually all that is needed to rejuvenate the eyes and refresh the appearance.
