Rhinoplasty

Rhinoplasty
Nose Prodecure

A procedure, under general anaesthesia, to reshape the nose – people most often ask for the bump to be straightened, the width to be reduced and the tip to be refined.

If the nose is crooked, a septoplasty to straighten the wall dividing right and left, inside the nose might be performed as well.

If you have any doubts or are unsure, spend more time thinking and discussing with others.

What to expect on the day

Surgery is done as a day case, with you arriving on the day. It is performed with you fully asleep, under TIVA general anaesthesia.

When you wake up you will have a cast and tape over the top of your nose and some light packing inside the nose (I do not like to use rigid packing or splints, as these can be very painful to remove). You will notice stitches underneath the nose and there will also be other stitches inside the nose that you may not be able to see or feel. The packing inside your nose is removed before you go home and the stitches and the cast are removed a week later.

Showering after rhinoplasty

Next day, but keep face dry for a week.

  • When can I start playing sports again?

4-6 weeks for most sport/exercise/heavy duty activities, 3 months for contact sports like football, hockey, kick-boxing.

  • Will I have any swelling and/or bruising?

Bruising will tend to reduce over the first 10 days but the good thing with the piezo technique is that bruising seems to be a lot less compared to the traditional ‘hammer and chisel’ techniques, so this can reduce downtime considerably.

Swelling is really important to keep in mind and something that almost everybody forgets. It takes quite a long time to go down after rhinoplasty and I tell people but they don’t really start to see the final result until six months after surgery. Things continue to change over the next year (and sometimes two years).
