Sagging Breasts

Sagging Breasts
Breast Concern

Sagging breasts are commonly associated with women whose breasts are also large.

Whilst it is evident that bigger breasts, heavier breasts tend to hang and sit lower on the chest than smaller, lighter breasts, this concern can affect many women of differing sized breasts.

Sagging breasts can develop for a number of reasons. Ageing changes the internal and external structure of the skin, as it characteristically becomes thinner and weaker over time. This can occur in the skin all over the body, and not just with the face.

Weaker skin provides less support for the underlying tissues, fat and muscles which is pulled downwards by gravity and causes the skin to stretch. Ageing also causes a loss of volume to the internal tissues as levels of collagen start to decline. This can leave features such as the breasts less volumised, which results in an excess of skin that ultimately starts to sag.

Lost volume to the breasts can also follow weight loss, causing them to sag when the internal mass decreases but the skin doesn’t shrink to accommodate. This process can also occur for the same reasons after pregnancy. Other factors to consider on the development of sagging breasts include: oestrogen deficiency, collagen deficiency and stretched Cooper’s ligament (the ligament that helps to suspend the breasts). In many cases sagging breasts will also affect the positioning of the nipples, which may seem to sit at the bottom of the breast, pointing downwards.

There are a number of ways that Real Plastic Surgery can address sagging breasts. The approach we take will depend on the individual’s concerns and any possible cause. Our surgical procedures may include the removal of excess skin, inserting implants, liposuction / fat transfer or a combination of these. During these procedures, the nipple can also be adjusted to sit in a more natural position on the breast.
