Real Plastic Surgery - Fat transfer to breast

Fat transfer to breast is a popular procedure at Real plastic surgery that helps to enhance the shape and size of the breasts. This procedure can produce more natural looking results when augmenting the appearance of the breasts as well as helping to sculpt another area of the body. It is particularly effective when combined with implants.

Fat transfer alone is rarely a viable alterative to implants, but in select cases this can be the case – please come in for a consult to discuss realistic options.

What to expect on the day

Fat grafting or lipofilling are other terms used for fat transfer to breast. The procedure uses the patient’s own fat stores which are harvested using the liposuction technique from areas such as: stomach, thighs, buttocks or hips.

The fat is then spun in a centrifuge to separate from blood and other fluids so it can be inserted back into the body. A consultation prior to the procedure will determine the exact points where the fat will be inserted. 

An injection is used to insert small amounts of fat to the breasts. It is usual for each breast to require slightly different volumes of fat, so we ensure that the procedure is tailored to suit your needs, improving concerns such as: small breasts, lost volume, sagging breasts and breast asymmetry. Although this procedure can be used instead of having implants, it can also in conjunction with an implant procedure for enhanced results. 

Showering after fat transfer to breasts.

You may be able to shower within 2 or 3 days of the procedure as there are no significant wounds on the breasts that will need to be kept dry. However, there may be some small incisions made where fat has been harvested. Your surgeon will advise how to care for these wounds.

Follow-up and aftercare.

We will ensure that a follow-up appointment is made with you before you leave the clinic, which usually takes place within 1 week of the procedure. Full recovery typically takes a couple of weeks, when many of your usual activities can be resumed. You will be given instructions regarding washing and how to care for any wounds, as well as any pain relief advice to ensure any sensitivity is kept to minimum.

Side effects often include: slight swelling, redness and some minor bruising, both where the fat was extracted from and where it was inserted into the breasts. This procedure is less invasive than augmentation with implants, causing much less scarring and quicker recovery time. 

The most appropriate anaesthetic will be discussed during your consultation. At REAL plastic surgery we typically use a general anaesthetic to perform this procedure. This ensures that you are asleep throughout the surgery, so you won’t feel any pain or discomfort.  

Fat transfer uses the body’s own fat stores which means it will need to be taken from areas of the body that are affected by excess fat. By removing this unwanted fat it can help to slim the chosen region. Depending on how much excess fat is present, and the amount of fatty tissue that is required, multiple areas can be used.
